Jonas Van Bockhaven is a multi media artist  based in Brussels, Belgium.

A background as a scientist, and a passion for art & art history drive his multi-media artistic practices (e.g. wax, ceramics, glass, and wood).

Jonas is influenced by architecture, geology, ancient jewellery, fragility, and queer life.

His sculptures—often monochromatic and minimalist—often use light as an inspiration or as a medium.

The recent ‘Crystalline’ series is inspired by the way atoms and molecules in solid matter are arranged in space, the study of which is called crystallography. This science is essential in linking chemical and physical properties of different materials and has many applications in fields like medicine, materials science etc.

The Crystalline series consist of monochromatic minimal wax shapes, intersected by a network of connected negative spherical spaces that are arranged like atoms are in solid matter, in arranged formations or in random chaos.

The interplay between light and the porous sculptures offer subtle colour differences and a multitude of perspectives that captivate its viewers.

The 'Packaging' series uses humble plastic packaging as a source of ideas. From the end of the 20th century onwards, society has been facing plastic pollution and its effect on nature. Despite numerous attempts to decrease this pollution (re-use and recycle efforts, development of sustainable alternatives etc.), plastic production remains to increase. As a result, global plastic waste doubled between 2000 and 2019.

The artist's difficulties between being apathic, becoming an eco-saviourism and becoming a total cyni, led him to create

In a naive attempt to not become cynical by ecological doom scenarios, the artist looks for the beauty and architectural qualities of  plastic packaging.
